30 Years of Building Homes — and Something Bigger
30 Years of Building Homes — and Something Bigger

Thirty years is a long time to build homes.

It’s enough time to watch architectural styles change, new communities take shape and entire stretches of the Carolina coast become places people from across the country now choose to call home.

It’s also enough time to learn that the homes themselves are only part of the story.

Hagood Homes celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. And while there are plenty of ways to measure those three decades — homes built, communities served, families welcomed home — the better measure may be everything that has happened around them.

The relationships. The people. The trust. The lessons learned. And the belief that building a home should always be personal.

It Started With a Different Way of Thinking

When Jim and Troy Kenny founded Hagood Homes in 1996, they brought complementary talents to the business — architecture and building — but also a shared idea about what a home should be.

It wasn’t simply a collection of rooms assembled on a homesite.

A home should reflect the people who would live there.

That philosophy shaped Hagood from the beginning. Instead of asking homeowners to fit their lives into a predetermined box, the goal was to understand how they wanted to live and build around it.

Over the years, floor plans changed. Design preferences changed. Building materials and technology evolved.

That fundamental idea didn’t.

A Home Is Personal

Spend enough time building homes and you begin to understand something: no two families use a house exactly the same way.

One homeowner wants a kitchen built for a crowd. Another would happily trade formal dining space for a larger pantry.

Someone building near the coast may imagine spending most evenings outside. Another homeowner is thinking years ahead and wants a first-floor primary suite and spaces that will continue working well as life changes.

For some, the move to coastal North Carolina has been planned for years. Others arrive because of a career, family or an opportunity they never expected.

That’s why personalization has remained such an important part of the Hagood approach.

The floor plan is the beginning of the conversation, not the end of it.

The People Behind the Homes

Thirty years of building also means generations of people have left their mark on Hagood Homes.

Designers. Project managers. Craftsmen. Trade partners. Sales professionals. Office staff. Realtors. Community partners.

And, of course, homeowners.

Some have built their first Hagood home. Others have returned to build another. Some managed much of the process from hundreds of miles away before finally making North Carolina home.

Every one of those experiences becomes part of the company’s history.

Because a builder’s reputation isn’t really created by what it says about itself.

It’s built one homeowner at a time.

Building Beyond the Front Door

The Hagood story has also come to mean more than the homes themselves.

Through Hagood Hope for Children, more than $2 million has been donated to organizations supporting children and families in the communities Hagood serves.

That commitment grew from a simple belief: if you’re fortunate enough to build a successful business in a community, you have a responsibility to be part of that community.

The houses may be the most visible part of what Hagood builds.

They aren’t the only part that matters.

A New Chapter

Companies that last 30 years don’t do it by refusing to change.

Hagood Homes has continued to evolve, including a change in ownership when Patrick Kennedy purchased the company several years ago. What followed wasn’t an effort to reinvent Hagood, but to build upon the foundation already there.

Today, Hagood is building in communities throughout southeastern North Carolina while expanding into new areas and new opportunities.

Kingbird is taking shape in Rocky Point. Shoreline at Carolina Beach Inlet introduces another expression of coastal living. Bradley Heights will bring Hagood into a different kind of residential offering. Growth into Pender and Onslow counties is extending the company’s reach.

The next version of Hagood Homes won’t look exactly like the last one.

It shouldn’t.

But growth only matters if you remember what made people trust you in the first place.

What Comes Next

An anniversary naturally invites you to look backward.

We’re grateful for the people who took a chance on Hagood Homes in the early years, the employees and partners who helped build the company, and every homeowner who trusted Hagood with something as personal as home.

But 30 years also gives us a reason to look forward.

There are new homes to design. New communities to enter. New families who haven’t met us yet. New ways of building and communicating that Jim and Troy couldn’t possibly have imagined in 1996.

And there are things that shouldn’t change at all.

Listen first.

Build thoughtfully.

Pay attention to the details.

Remember who the home is for.

Thirty years ago, Hagood Homes began with an idea about building homes around the people who would live in them.

That’s still the idea.

We’re just getting started on what comes next.
